The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult

Writer's picture: Lauren CampbellLauren Campbell

Jodi Picoult's novel, "The Storyteller" is a true page turner. You will experience an array of emotions while reading this book, and be provoked to review your own code of ethics. Sage Singer is forced to grapple with a morally conscience dilemma, when a seemingly kind, innocent elderly man named, Josef Weber, asks her to assist him with his own death. Naturally, Sage is alarmed by such a peculiar request. The catch, Josef has revealed to Sage that he once wore a Nazi SS guard uniform. He believed this would justify his fatal request, because of his wrong doings that can never be erased from his dark past. Sage's relationship with Josef would then change in an instant after discovering this information. Her own grandmother was a Holocaust survivor, and Sage wonders how she would feel knowing that her granddaughter did a favor for a man that caused a great deal of pain in her life. Sage questions the idea that her only motivation to help kill Josef Weber would be for revenge. On the other hand, if she grants Josef's wish, will he view Sage's act as one of forgiveness? You will become engulfed in the twists and turns that are held within the pages of this book, as Sage struggles to differentiate between what is right and wrong.

Until my next post... happy reading!
