Small Great Things: Book Review

Writer's picture: Lauren CampbellLauren Campbell

I adore Jodi Picoult's books, so I knew that I would enjoy this novel, "Small Great Things" when I first saw it at the bookstore. Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse. She starts a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be reassigned to another patient minutes later. Little did she know, the newborn's parents are white supremacists and don't want Ruth, who is African American to come into contact with their baby. The hospital respects their wishes, but chaos is soon to follow. The infant goes into cardiac arrest when Ruth is alone in the nursery. She is faced with a tough decision, does she intervene or does she follow the hospitals orders? Although she hesitates, Ruth begins to perform CPR, therefore she is charged with a serious crime. A Caucasian public defender, named Kennedy takes her case, yet she insists that mentioning any racial issues will not help Ruth's case. Ruth struggles to adjust to her new normal, while keeping her son's best interest at heart. Kennedy and Ruth embark on a journey that will test their own identities, and they will discover the true meaning of equality. This novel and its message will keep you thinking long after you have turned the last page. Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult is an unforgettable, thought-provoking book.

Until my next post...happy reading!
